Pendulum CNT-104S

Super-high-performance: 4-channel, ultra-high speed and 7 ps resolution

The ultra-high single-shot resolution gives better insights into the design under test, faster results in phase comparisons between clocks, more accurate calibration, and allows capture of very small time/phase changes. Track and compare 4 parallel signals with 7 ps resolution/timestamp, at a speed of 50 ns between samples in each channel.

Gap-free, zero-dead-time counting provides back-to-back measurements without losing any cycle, even for very long measurements. The CNT-104S is also a high-performance Modulation Domain Analyzer (MDA). Thanks to the high speed of up to 20M meas./s for 4 parallel signals, very fast frequency or phase/time changes can be captured in real time.

The CNT-104S has a unique 4-channel design, plus an optional RF input. All channels perform parallel, independent, and gap-free time-stamping of the input signal. This allows for new measurements that earlier required many instruments, like phase comparison of 4 atomic clocks, without the need for a switch. And Multi-stop Time-Interval measurements (1 start and 3 stop events) for time-of-flight measurements in physical research.

Outstanding ease-of-use – color touch screen and intuitive menus

The big color touch screen with its intuitive menus, lets you make your settings via a simple finger touch. Alternatively, you can connect a wireless mouse to the front USB host port, and make your settings via mouse clicks on the screen instead. Or you can use the web-server interface to control CNT-104S from a large PC-screen.

The intelligent AUTO SET will help you to make the best settings for each measurement function. You do not even need to be close to your instrument. The web server functionality lets you connect to the CNT-104S over Ethernet, view the front panel, and control the measurements and read results via a few mouse clicks. When adjusting a frequency source to given limits, the graphic display gives fast and accurate visual calibration guidance.

You can pan and zoom in graphs to view individual samples with cursor read-outs. Any measured signal can be smoothed, to reveal underlying trends in the presence of excessive noise.

The NEW CNT-104S Multi-channel Frequency Analyzer outperforms every existing benchtop frequency counter and time interval analyzer on the market, independent of measurement task.

SCN series EMC Scanners are the new industry standard for EMC scanning, with 2D or 4D options.

Pendulum’s DETECTUS EMC-Scanners are high-resolution, affordable scanners that come in three different sizes to fit most DUTs. They combine very-high scan resolution of 0.1 mm with probe head rotation, and the best-in-class scanning software to deliver powerful visualization of the EMC test.

For boards with components of substantially different heights, the optional laser distance meter will enable you to follow the DUT’s topography and measure at a fixed distance from the DUT, automatically creating a precise 3D-model of the DUT. With Pendulum’s DETECTUS EMC-Scanners, you’ll be able to quickly and easily identify any potential problems with your product’s electromagnetic compatibility, ensuring that it meets all applicable standards.

The Pendulum Detectus EMC-Scanners are a complete scanner system that can be used to test the field strength of an object. The system consists of the EMC-Scanner Hardware package, the Detectus Scanning SW (DSS), a Spectrum Analyzer, and a PC to run the scanner SW.

The object to be tested is placed on the coordinate board, and a small near-field probe is moved in a controlled and repeatable path above the test object, registering the field strength. The probe output signal in every position is measured by the Spectrum Analyzer, and transferred to the scanner SW. The smart SW combines the spatial information (X,Y,Z) with the spectrum in that position, and presents detailed results.

Leading Performance from the Detectus designers

With 25 μm step size of the scanner, you can pinpoint emission sources in densely packed designs. You can even follow emission hot spots inside an IC, using the IC option

You can scan emissions up to 10 GHz, with the standard Pendulum Probe kits. If the user has near-field probes going up to higher frequencies, e.g. 70 GHz, these can normally be attached and used for EMC-scanning. The SW has no limits, but you must of course use a Spectrum Analyzer that support the frequency range.

Within the Detectus HRE series you can choose from two different sizes, with or without probe rotation, to fit most test objects. The scan area (WxDxH) is:

280x180x85mm (3D or 4D*)

390x290x130 mm (3D or 4D*)

* 4D = 3D xyz movement, plus probe rotation 0 to 360<sup>o</sup>

Comparative measurements of EMI for six different IC de-coupling capacitor alternatives

Advantages of the Detectus HRE scanner

In R&D

Using the EMC-Scanner during the early stages of design enables you to detect potential emission and immunity problems before they become integrated into the product and expensive to correct.

If a product has failed a test at a test house, normally you only learn which frequency failed, not the location of the noise source. The EMC-Scanner can help you find the source, and repeated measurements while redesigning your product helps you lower the emission levels.

Similarly, if your problem was immunity, you can (optionally) scan for sensitive areas and repeat measurements while strengthening your product.

You can compare different design solutions and make comparative measurements of electromagnetic emissions. You can even analyze the EMI-noise inside an IC or a compact module, thanks to the ultra-high-resolution step size (25 μm)

In Q&A

The EMC-Scanner can help you maintain a high quality in the production line. You can make measurements on samples from the production line and easily compare them with a reference. That way you can make sure that, for example, a change of supplier of a component doesn’t affect the emission spectra in a negative way.

World class SW lets you SEE electromagnetic fields

The easy-to-use and feature-rich DSS SW let you measure and visualize the intensity and the location of a radiation source at a component level – or even inside a component. The results of such a measurement can be shown as two- or three-dimensional colored maps. The measurements can easily be repeated creating objective, comparative measurement results.

Measurements can be saved and later compared with board-level changes, thanks to the exact repetitive scanning. The SW even allows to subtract two scanning results to emphasize the true difference of any board layout – or component – change.

With 0.1mm step size of the scanner, you can pinpoint emission sources in densely packed designs, at comparable cost to 1mm scanners

You can scan emissions up to 10 GHz, with the standard Pendulum Probe kits. If the user has near-field probes going up to higher frequencies, e.g. 70 GHz, then these can easily be attached and used for EMC-scanning. The SW has no limits, but you must of course use a Spectrum Analyzer that supports the frequency range.

Within the Detectus SCN series you can choose from various sizes, to fit most test objects. The scan table comes in four basic sizes (WxDxH):

200×100 mm (2D scanning without Z-axis and probe rotation)

200x100x100 mm (4D = 3D scanning with probe rotation)

300x200x100 mm (4D = 3D scanning with probe rotation)

600x400x300 mm (4D = 3D scanning with probe rotation)

Advantages of the Detectus SCN scanner

Fast Speed and High Resolution

The CNT-90 is a high-performance frequency counter that can measure frequencies up to 250,000 measurements/sec. It also has a memory depth of 750k, meaning you can store lots of data. Additionally, it has a high resolution of 100 ps single shot (time), so you can get very accurate readings. Finally, the CNT-90 offers ease-of-use, with a multi-mode graphic/numeric display that makes it easy to read data. And all this comes at a very competitive price.

GPIB/USB Increased Throughput and Efficiency

The CNT-90 has a USB and GPIB (IEEE 488.2) interface. The GPIB interface follows the SCPI/1999 standard and also includes a switchable emulation mode for the HP53131A. This will make it easy to use the CNT-90 in systems that were designed for the older model counters.

The CNT-90 saves test system time by increasing throughput up to 90%. With a fast bus transfer speed of 2k measurement results/sec. (GPIB or USB), the CNT-90 quickly gets results to you.

Zero Dead-Time

The CNT-90’s continuous time-stamping of events enables it to capture all individual periods without any dead time. This means that it can measure every complete event cycle without interpolation errors. This process allows for a least squares linear regression of multiple measurements, which adds 3 or more digits to the measurement resolution.

Microwave Frequency Range and Time Base

The CNT-90 has a frequency range of 400 MHz. It also has the option to have a frequency range of 3, 8, 14 and 20 GHz. There are two different types of OCXO options: one with high stability (0.01 ppm/month), and one with ultra-high stability (0.003 ppm/month).

Graphic Display and Multi-mode Presentation

The CNT-90 is a frequency counter that shows the result of your measurements in a graphical way. This includes histograms, trend lines, and modulation. This will help you understand the randomness of the signals you are measuring and how they change over time, from slow drift, to fast jitter and modulation. You may also examine the full statistical analysis of your data, which includes a mean, min., max., p-value, standard deviation, and Allan deviation in both graphical and numerical form.

With TimeView and the Modulation Domain Analyzer software (optional), the CNT-90 statistical processing is more powerful and provides expanded analysis capabilities.

Battery Option

The CNT-90 and CNT-90XL have an optional battery pack with 90 Wh capacity, capable of mains-free operation for at least 4.5 hours. In stand-by the battery pack can keep an OCXO warm and running for over 24 hours. Battery operation of a frequency counter/analyzer is valuable in three different applications:

Mains-free operation in the field

Transportation of high-stability OCXO to maintain stability, which gives instant use at destination without any warm-up time

Battery backup acting as a built in UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply)
