Using the Extech RF20 Portable Salinity Refractometer:

The instrument measures the refractive index of the sample and displays the result in parts per thousand (0/00) and specific gravity (d 20/20).

1. Zero Adjustment
Cover the prism with a few drops of distilled water from the included vial. Close the cover plate and rotate the adjusting screw so that the light/dark boundary line (known as the shadow-line) evens up with the zero line. After the zero adjustment, clean the prism with soft cloth.

2. Sample Preparation and Measurement Readings
To take a reading, place a few drops of a sample liquid on the measurement prism. Ensure that enough solution is
added to the prism in order to cover the entire prism. Close the prism so that the liquid spreads across the entire surface of the prism without air bubbles or dry spots. Allow the sample to remain on the prism for approximately 30 seconds.

While holding the instrument under a light source, look through the eyepiece. The salinity concentration is determined by the intersection of the boundary of the light and dark fields (known as the shadow-line) on the printed scale. The left side of the scale indicates the specific gravity and the right side parts per thousand. If the scale appears out of focus, the eyepiece may be adjusted by rotating the knurled portion.

The instrument also features an eye guard to prevent stray light from entering the eyepiece and causing reflections. It may be necessary to adjust the position of the light source to maximize the contrast of the shadow-line.

Under normal conditions, optimal contrast is obtained by holding the instrument underneath and perpendicular to a light source. Once a reading has been taken, wipe dry with a clean cloth (do not wash or rinse) and place the instrument in the supplied plastic case. Store the instrument in a safe, dry environment.

The Extech RF41 Portable Battery Coolant/Glycol Refractometer with ATC (°C)

A refractometer is a simple instrument used for measuring concentrations of aqueous solutions. It requires only a few drops of liquid and is used throughout the food, agricultural, chemical, and manufacturing industries.

When light enters a liquid it changes direction – this is called refraction.

A refractometer measure the degree to which the light changes direction, this is called the angle of refraction. A refractometer takes the refraction angles and correlates them to refractive index (nD) values that have been established. Using these values, you can determine the concentrations of solutions. For example, solutions have different refractive indexes depending on their concentration.

The Extech RF41 Portable Battery Coolant/Glycol Refractometer with ATC (°C) measures the Propylene/Ethylene Glycol freezing point from -50 to 0°C and the Specific Gravity of battery acid from 1.11 to 1.30 and provides a quick reference of battery charge condition.

The Extech RF41 requires only 2 or 3 drops of solution for fast and accurate readings.

Automatic Temperature Compensation provides repeatable measurements on an easy to read scale. Prism and lens with a simple focus adjustment. Includes carrying case and calibration screwdriver.

NOTE: under normal operating conditions the calibration only needs to be checked periodically

Maintenance

1. If the ambient temperature is not within the automatic temperature compensation range (10 – 30°C) the instrument must be calibrated before testing commences.

2. The prism must be cleaned thoroughly with a soft, clean damp cloth after each use – failure to do so will result in inaccurate readings & possible long term damage

3. The instrument must be kept in a dry clean environment to prevent condensation forming on the optical components

4. If used in accordance with the instructions & all warning are followed – the optical performance will remain constant & the instrument will give many years of reliable service.

The Reed MT-090 Features:

Brix% is calibrated to the number of grams of cane sugar contained in 100g of cane sugar solution

When measuring a sugar solution, the Brix% should perfectly match the actual concentration

With solutions of other components, a conversion chart is required

Features automatic temperature compensation

BRIX measurement is a well known application in the food and beverage industry. Strictly speaking the BRIX measurement is the determination of pure sucrose content in water (1 degree Brix = 1g of sucrose in 100g of solution), but the BRIX measurement is used in many other applications (soft drinks, fruit juices, tomato concentrates, etc..) which are very often far away from pure sucrose/water solutions. This has been leading to some confusions, especially when comparing results obtained with different measuring techniques (hydrometer, pycnometer, refractometer, digital density meter).

Different sample types

When measuring samples other than pure sucrose content in water different results will be obtained when using different techniques (hydrometer, pycnometer, refractometer, digital density meter).

Brix measurement

BRIX measurement can be done by refractive index as well as by density. When measuring pure sucrose content in water, both techniques will give the same result. Density and refractive index are strongly temperature dependent, but as this dependency is controlled in the corresponding instrument. Two types of instruments can be used, portable or benchtop instruments. The benchtop instruments offer built-in temperature control (Peltier) and higher accuracy than portable instruments.

Brix is a scale based on the amount that light bends when it passes through a liquid. If one were to place one’s hand in a pond and measure the amount it appeared to bend, and then place it in the ocean, it would appear to bend a different amount. That differential light bending is the best tool currently available to consumers to determine the value of crops that are purchased or produced. The Bric Chart is the scale that anyone can use to determine poor, average, good or excellent in a foodstuff.

The REED R9500 Brix Refractometer shows the concentration percentage of the soluble solids content (total solids) of a sample (water solution)

The soluble solids content is the total of all the solids dissolved in the water – beginning with sugar, salts, protein, acids, etc. and the measurement reading value is the value of the sum total of these

Brix% is calibrated to the number of grams of cane sugar contained in 100g of cane sugar solution (When measuring a sugar solution, the Brix% should perfectly match the actual concentration)
